How will technology features drive emotional experiences?

This week Lively’s CEO Mike White talks to Mike Ray, head of business & strategy at Unity Technologies , about how the world of experiences has been turned on its head with streaming platforms, technology developments including music in the metaverse.

Who owns the metaverse?

Everybody has their own definition of what it is, what it’s going to be, how we’re going to generate revenue and interact with it. We’re accessing a fifth dimension that’s always been there: a virtual digital dimension. People will try to control it and own it and make money from it just like they’ve always done with the internet. But this time there is a simple difference: it will be owned by the creators and consumers. We’ll see an exploration of business models and experiences that will drive the development of the metaverse.

Technology helps us create our own experiences

The ultimate goal is to democratize creation, and allow everyone to create their own experience - whether it’s a game, a story, an audio or an augmented experience. We’ll get to the point where everybody can create a game, just like everyone can now create their own website. We’re moving towards an experience engine. Life is only about two things: experiences and relationships, and it’s all about emotional connection.

Digital participation is growing

Gig and concert livestreams are just a sugar substitute - they weren't quite the real thing. But we're starting to make changes in digital participation. Unity’s work with Charles Gambino has allowed people to digitally participate in the event with augmented experiences on their phone. Technology means performers can be streamed into your house through volumetric capture - even better than a hologram.
